my teaching philosophy

As a teacher, it is my goal to encourage each individual student to reach their fullest potential both as trombonists and as musical artists. The skills I will foster and develop in each student include:

-beautiful, singing trombone sound

-strong, stable sense of rhythm

-discerning, accurate sense of pitch

-ease and command in all registers and dynamics

-efficiency in the physical aspects of playing, such as posture, embouchure, and slide control

-appropriate use of air in playing

-MOST IMPORTANTLY a creative and curious attitude towards musical expression

In developing these skills, students also learn self-discipline which will serve them well in all areas of life. No two students are identical, so a large part of my work as a teacher is to draw out and play to each student’s unique strengths and learning styles. As the student is expected to diligently practice, I share that responsibility by continually refining teaching strategies for each student; in this way, teacher and student jointly foster the student’s growth.
